In this book, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) sanitary sewerage system was appraised. Using a developed evaluation criteria and scoring format, the system performance was evaluated and found to be 50%, hence necessitating that an improvement design be carried out. The improvement design consisting of an optimized sewer extension network was put forward. The dynamic programming - optimization techniques as employed by SEWER 3.0 software, has been utilized to identify and determine the best pipe-slopes and sizes combinations for the proposed sewer extension network. The output of the SEWER 3.0 analysis reveals that an additional pipe length of 3,298 m is required for the proposed network at an optimized total cost of $161,097 USD). In order to make proper evaluation of the existing WSP, the ponds were visited, and influent and effluent qualities of the ponds were determined and compared with standard effluent quality requirements. The results obtained for the suspended solids and faecal coliform quality parameters show that WSP treatment performance is generally low on the average. This led to a higher than normal total sludge to be generated.

Wastes originating from domestic, commercial, and industrial sources (often mixed with storm water) are collected, treated, and discharged back into the environment. The purpose of sanitary service is to prevent ground water pollution and minimize water borne diseases. The city of Addis Ababa provides sewerage service to its inhabitants by connecting their internal sewer lines to the sewerage network, however the level of service is still regarded as very low. This paper is therefore meant to assess the performance of the existing sewerage system both in technical and economic efficiency terms specifically in the Arada sub city, Addis Ababa. To achieve this, different evaluation methods were used. The methods comprise field visits (accompanied by capturing some pictures of the problem areas), cost analysis and comparison of the two common waste disposal techniques used in the city, Viz. vacuum truck and sewer line, gathering from customers in order to identify the satisfaction level and finally evaluation of the sewerage network using sewer CAD version 4.3 to check and compare the existing hydraulic capacity and the future expectations.

Cost Recovery for Water and Sanitation Utility ...

The Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS) Sector in Zambia is undergoing a reform process which emanated into the creation of Commercial Utility companies (CUs) to provide water supply and sewerage services to the urban and peri-urban areas. CUs were expected to meet the full costs of service provision through user charges. Over the years, CUs have depended on government subsidies and donor support for operational and investment funds. In addition, they have operated amidst gross inefficiencies. To date, none of the CUs has reached full cost recovery. The salient findings of study were that Commercial Utilities operate inefficiently as evident from the huge water loses, low coverage rates and low hours of supply. These inefficiencies in turn affected the quality of service, revenue collection and also erode tariff increases. As a result, none of the Commercial Utilities was able to attain full cost recovery. The conclusion of the study was that Commercial Utilities should focus on becoming more efficient as opposed to upwards tariff adjustments to enhance financial viability and sustainability. NWASCO should, therefore, foster efficiency gains in the Water supply and Sanitation Sector.

Colonias and Public Policy in Texas and Mexico

Today in Texas, over 1500 colonias in the counties along the Mexican border are home to some 400,000 people. Often lacking basic services, such as electricity, water and sewerage, fire protection, policing, schools, and health care, these 'irregular' subdivisions offer the only low-cost housing available to the mostly Hispanic working poor. This book presents the results of a major study of colonias in three transborder metropolitan areas and uncovers the reasons why colonias are spreading so rapidly. Peter Ward compares Texas colonias with their Mexican counterparts, many of which have developed into fully integrated working-class urban communities. He describes how Mexican governments have worked with colonia residents to make physical improvements and upgrade services-a model that Texas policymakers can learn from, Ward asserts. Finally, he concludes with a hard-hitting checklist of public policy initiatives that need to be considered as colonia housing policy enters its second decade in Texas.

Low-Cost Sewerage

Low-cost sewerage provides practical solutions to the sanitation needs of low-income areas. As a result of the currently very rapid urban population growth, the demand for sewerage exceeds the resources of most high density urban areas in developing countries. Low-cost alternatives to conventional sewerage, such as settled sewerage and simplified sewerage, therefore need to be developed. This book is the result of contributions by both academics and practitioners who attended the International Conference on Low-cost Sewerage which was held at the University of Leeds, England, in July 1995. Low-cost sewerage technologies are described and their applications in both developed and developing countries are detailed.
