A Low-Cost Portable Remote Sensing System

A low cost portable remote sensing system has been established for use in crop health assessment and large scale land resource assessment. The important features of the system are, it monitors the near infrared, which is important for agricultural applications, and it incorporates position and attitude measuring equipment allowing for geo-rectified images to be produced without the use of ground control points. The equipment is designed to be hand held and hence requires no structural modification to the aircraft. Usually, the portable remote sensing consists of an inertia measurement unit (IMU) which accelerometer based, low-cost GPS devices and a small format false colour composite digital camera which is cheap, easy to install and suitable to be carried on the small aircraft such as Cessna 152. This book, therefore, provides a new method to deal with the low cost portable remote sensing devices and it should be able to help individual or small company in managing the agriculture field.

Remote sensing helps many applications like precision irrigation, habitat mapping, and traffic monitoring. However, due to shortcomings of current remote sensing platforms - like high cost, low spatial, and temporal resolution - many applications do not have access to useful remote sensing data. A team at the Center for Self-Organizing and Intelligent Systems (CSOIS) together with the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) at Utah State University has been developing a new remote sensing platform to deal with these shortcomings in order to give more applications access to remote sensing data. This platform (AggieAir) is low cost, fully autonomous, easy to use, independent of a runway, has a fast turnover time, and a high spatial resolution. A program called the Geospatial Real-Time Aerial Image Display (gRAID) has also been developed to process the images taken from AggieAir. gRAID is able to correct the camera lens distortion, georeference, and display the images on a 3D globe, and export them in a conventional Geographic Information System (GIS) format for further processing. AggieAir and gRAID prove to be innovative and useful tools for remote sensing.

This project presents the proof-of-concept of the new cost-effective Earth remote sensing GNSS-DIRECT payload, suitable for small satellites such as CubeSats. This new instrument has been designed at ESEIAAT-UPC during a Final Degree Project, and it will be tested for first time during a stratospheric sounding balloon experiment. The processing technique implemented in the GNSS-DIRECT payload can provide accurate GNSS Radio- Occultation (GNSS-RO) observations of the atmosphere. Simultaneously, GNSS Reflectometry (GNSS-R) measurements of the Earth surface can be collected for grazing angles, when coherent scattering effects provide strong forward scattered GPS signals. Results from this experiment will be investigated to determine the degree of signal coherence over land surfaces from a high altitude, and low speed platform. This scenario will provide a unique opportunity for research, and conclusions could be useful to improve our understanding on the use of GNSS for remote sensing.
