The Beating Heart is an allusion to the continuous pulsing of feelings that lie beneath the surface reality of our lives. This collection 'slips into the lining' of various experiences from a childhood in the ancient city of Rome, whose 'famous walls bulged with sanctioned corruption' to the loneliness of a London bedsit, 'narrow as a capsule, a chilly low-cost limbo', to the lure of a Sydney bushwalk, where 'mist lies over the grass, the trees, the everything, as lightly as a suggestion'. The elegant assurance of these meditative and melodic lines remind us that poetry can be, as the author believes, 'a form of music'.'Here is a poet who understands the extraordinary in the commonplace, the flimsy place of life. The poems mill to edges, ripple by recollection and poignancy - the intergenerational weight of knowledge in simple things, 'with foldings of clothes pressed smooth as stone', where the 'paper-hin' present is convulsed waiting on a child's operation. O'Hagan's mastery of the transcendence in moments, and the distillation of experiences, is the gift of a writer at the height of her powers.' - James Walton, poet'Each and every poem in The Beating Heart penetrates deeply into the core of our existence. There is no path, crossroad or threshold this gifted poet fears to take with her astute observations of what is often taken for granted. The migrant, the traveller, the historian, the pioneer and the mother are framed within immaculate and harmonic wordscapes. There is not one missed beat within this captivating collection of what it means to be alive.' - Angela Costi, poet and social justice advocate

The Index Revolution: Why Investors Should Join...

The evidence-based approach to a more worthwhile portfolio. The Index Revolution argues that active investing is a loser's game, and that a passive approach is more profitable in today's market. By adjusting your portfolio asset weights to match a performance index, you consistently earn higher rates of returns and come out on top in the long run. This book explains why, and describes how individual investors can take advantage of indexing to make their portfolio stronger and more profitable. By indexing investment operations at a very low cost, and trusting that active professionals have set securities prices as correctly as possible, you will achieve better long-term results than those who look down on passive approaches while following outdated advice that no longer works. "Beating the market" is much harder than it used to be, and investors who continue to approach the market with that mindset populate the rolls of market losers time and time again. This book explains why indexing is the preferred approach in the current investment climate, and destroys the popular perception of passive investing as a weak market strategy. Structure your portfolio to perform better over the long term Trust in the pricing and earn higher rates of return Learn why a passive approach is more consistent and worthwhile Ignore overblown, outdated advice that is doomed to disappoint All great investors share a common secret to success: rational decision-making based on objective information. The Index Revolution shows you a more rational approach to the market for a more profitable portfolio. Superinvestors: Lessons from the Greatest Inves...

There's never been a better time to be an ordinary investor. With more opportunities, lower costs, and a more level playing field than ever before, the individual really can go head-to-head with the professionals. But there remains one big difference between Wall Street (or the Square Mile) and the individual investor: technique and experience. Superinvestors provides both in a new way. Based on MoneyWeek's popular "Great Investors in History" column, it takes an in-depth look at 20 of the best investors in the last 200 years and shows the listener how to copy them. These investors have been picked for a variety of criteria, including their investing excellence, the different ways in which they made money - and, above all, for what they can teach individual investors. Investors representing a wide range of investment styles are included - ranging from David Ricardo, who made a fortune by correctly predicting the outcome of the Battle of Waterloo, to the patient value-orientated approach of Warren Buffett. The book also looks at some of the innovators, including John Bogle's development of index funds as a low-cost way of getting exposure to the market and David Harding's data-driven approach that aims to avoid human emotion. The book then looks at each of the investors' careers in depth. This includes their background, the strategies that they used to beat their peers and an honest evaluation of their success, using a special star ranking system. Naturally, the main focus is on their best investments. However, sometimes failures can be extremely instructive - and the book looks at those investments that didn't quite go to plan. Finally, each chapter concludes by detailing the lessons that ordinary investors can learn from them. Superinvestors is a treasure trove of success stories, cautionary tales, legendary stock picks and world-beating strategies that will fascinate and inspire investors of every level. 1. Twisted Terahertz Generation Carrying Angular m...

Developing a low-cost and accessible methods for generating twisted terahertz light is necessary, because there are a few methods to produce torsional terahertz and also the efficiency of the methods is low. In this book a new method is proposed to generate twisted terahertz in plasma. Based on the beating of two Laguerre-Gaussian lasers in a rippled plasma medium, can be generated a nonlinear electron current. The nonlinear electron current radiates a terahertz wave having superposition of two orbital angular momenta. For having Laguerre-Gaussian profile and carrying only one of angular momenta, has been proposed a rippled density. Here the pivotal effects on the generation of terahertz radiation, such as self-focusing and cross-focusing are investigated. The propagation of twisted lasers in plasma is studied. Propagating many Laguerre-Gaussian lasers, can produce a great filamentation. The filamentation is affected by the self-focusing and cross focusing effects. As it is seen in this research, the terahertz generation is grown by these effects. Furthermore, the present study surveys the effective parameters on the generation of vortex THz radiation.

The goal of this book is to provide an introduction to the practical use of mobile NMR at a level as basic as the operation of a smart phone. Each description follows the same didactic pattern: introduction, basic theory, pulse sequences and parameters, beginners-level measurements, advanced-level measurements, and data processing.Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the most popular method for chemists to analyze molecular structures while Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool for medical doctors that provides high-contrast images of biological tissue depicting the brain function and the beating heart. In both applications large super-conducting magnets are employed which magnetize atomic nuclei of an object positioned inside the magnet. Their circulating motion is interrogated by radio-frequency waves. Depending on the operating mode, the frequency spectrum provides the chemist with molecular information, the medical doctor with anatomic images, while the materials scientist is interested in NMR relaxation parameters, which scale with material properties and determine the contrast in magnetic resonance images.Recent advances in magnet technology led to a variety of small permanent magnets, by which NMR spectra, images, and relaxation parameters can be measured with mobile and low-cost instruments.

Low cost competitors, who offer 'good enough' products and services at very attractive prices, are currently significantly impacting the businesses of many leading companies, and some are starting to 'move up' to challenge the traditional companies in their core markets. It's only a matter of time before most companies will feel the pressure from these aggressive, cut-price competitors. Beating Low Cost Competition offers a step-by-step structured approach to help executives in traditional companies with premium brands think through the options for responding to their low cost rivals and select the most appropriate strategy to win in their chosen markets. By examining a wide-ranging group of companies from around the world, Adrian Ryans provides numerous examples of how different companies in different industries have responded to low cost competitors and analyses the effectiveness of their strategies. He also discusses the leadership and cultural challenges that many companies are facing as they take steps to respond to their low cost rivals. Ultimately, the insights gained from this book will lead to better and more profitable business decisions. Adrian Ryans is Professor of Marketing and Strategy at IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland. He has designed and taught on executive programs for organizations in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia, including GE, Bank of Montreal, Medtronic, Deloitte, Borealis, Saurer, Vestas, IBM, Boeing, National Semiconductor, BioWare, ASML, Holcim, Varian, Hoechst, Amgen, Fluke, LSI Logic, Hutchison Port Holdings and Qualcomm. He has also acted as a consultant for a number of leading global corporations.
